New Music: Janelle Monáe – Q.U.E.E.N. (feat. Erykah Badu)

Listen…before you move any further into this post, know that one of my dream collaborations has now been created and I’m more than thrilled with the outcome. Janelle Monáe and Erykah Badu are two musicians that I openly stan for, so this single is greater than cinnamon buns and sex.

Miss Monáe is finally ready to serve the universe her sophomore album, The Electric Lady, and this song titled “Q.U.E.E.N.” is leading the new record. It’s got just the right amount of funk and I can’t wait to see the visuals and performances that come along with this. Excuse me, while I hit The Watusi.

I really wanted to like this. I did, but all it did was make me wish there was 3x more Erykah and 2/3 less Janelle. I was underwhelmed, and I didn’t wanna be. It talks about twerkin by yourself in the mirror and acting peculiar. All the things that make up the totality of my being and with that my reaction is still

    • Melissa

Yes! I was totally underwhelmed! I couldnt quite figure out why I couldnt like it. Especially since I love these ladies and their voices and song writing styles so much.

      • Maharaja Misty

Yeah..something wasn’t ‘gelling’, but to be honest I didn’t expect it to. I’m more of a Badu fan but I like Janelle I even kinda dug her rapping part. But this ain’t doing it for me. Now if this were a perfect world this w/b a duet with Badu & Joi Gilliam.

        • ZJ

Yes! Joi and Erykah together would be fire.

  • Melissa

Hmmm..I was SUPER excited when I saw these two ladies names together on a song but I have to admit…I dont know if I like it. I think I expected it to sound differently or something. And I

“Keep sellin dope we gonna keep sellin hope.” You betta tell em Janelle. I like it. I expected to hear alot more from Erykah then I did, but it’s not a bad song.

Was I blown away? Not exactly, but it’s 100% a cute look for both of them and I know they would both slay in a video, which would be more than enough for me.

Categorize me, I defy every label!

  • Niko

i love both these artist. i was underwelmed as well.. all i needed was a solid verse from erykah.. and a couple of harmony’s.. lol i guess she doesn’t have to do that.

  • Chanel

    Loved it.

  • Dee

I loved every bit of it. Janelle always has a MESSAGE in her songs that keeps me hungry for more.

  • RamenNoodles

My two queens finally worked together? I love it. I need to hear it live though anybody who’s a fan of them know why.

Wouldn’t Electric Lady be her third album? Who cares. I’m just glad that Janelle Monae is giving us some new music. YEEEEEEEEEESSSS!!! Let the musical orgasms begin.

  • Sherród

I thought the song was just *okay* until that breakdown at the end. THAT is Janelle Monae’s signature electro-funk-choral sound (think Dance or Die, or BaBopBaYa) and it is glorious. I don’t think this single stands on its own, but if it’s any indication of the rest of the album, I am all the way here for it.

Here for it, clocked in on time, with a packed lunch, seated.

Janelle Monae is the shit, point blank period. She had her own unique style, vocals, ideas, and she was groomed by outkast, on how to package that shit up and punch you dead in your face with amazing music, visuals, performance, etc. Her albums are flawless and have replay value for years. Get into some real shit, with Ms. Monae. This is someone I DO stan for.

    • Kenya’s KuntyFanWave

She’s actually worth stanning for. Yep.

      • Jacob Alexander

        Whole- heartedly!

    • Yep It’s Kwanzaa

“and she was groomed by outkast”

At that point no questions should be asked. Signed, sealed and delivered Janelle is IT!

  • banjeegirleffect

After a second listen, all sources conclude…they can’t let this come on in the club ya’ll. that groove ain’t no punk!

-___- i hate when two great artists come together and they do stuff like this.. sing a damn album filler… PLEASE TRY AGAIN LADIES please for the love of music… shelf this!

  • Kyana

That was great, I am here.

  • YaVyBnMe

I agree with the person who mentioned needing to see them perform this live. There is a disconnect with this song that, considering how much feeling I get from listening to these ladies past music, I question whether they were in the studio together. I think had they worked on this at the same time they would’ve played off each other so much better. Sometimes the same modern tech that allows people on different continents to make music together actually screws it up. But after all that…I’m still here for it :-)

The best thing about Janelle Monáe (besides her music) is she is the SOLE SURVIVOR under Diddy record label *praise dances for he life*

  • Joen Clayton

Love this song even more after seeing the video. The ladies ATE that one! Perhaps Frank Gatson and JaQuel Knight should take a peek….
