New Music: Drake – Started From The Bottom

Kid Fury February 1, 2013 New Music 50 Comments

Although there were reports that Aabriyah was dropping his new song on Grammy night, the rapper just released it on his OVO blog. The Mike Zombie-produced track, titled “Started From The Bottom,” serves as the first single to his upcoming third studio album.

“I am proud of every part of my past and I’m excited for this song to find a place in your life as well,” Drake said on his blog. “I didn’t feel I needed any interviews or radio or press to launch this song. It felt right to come back to the site that I started on and release it to the people that started here with me.”

I really like the beat and flow of this record. Vocally, Drizzy kind of sounds like my uncle after a few Red Stripes and a stressful game of dominoes. I’m enjoying it overall, though. Check it out below.

He sounds different. So glad he changed his subject matter up!

    • Earthshaker1217

Yes. He’s going to back to basics and his roots and staying out the strip club.

Can I get the beat and cast Drake into the ocean, Cast Away style?

    • Yep It’s Kwanzaa

No do it old Rose style via Titanic just casually drop him in the Atlantic on purpose but act like it was an accident.

      • lullatoned

        Good day to you.

  • saucyfbaby

That’s it? That’s what you come back with, Drake? I don’t see alot of growth.

I’ve only listened to it once & I’m already sick of the hook.

Ehhh not hit material to me at all, but it’s ok for what it is. I thought he’d come with something better than this.

  • aa

zzzzzzzzzzzz. still using the same old formula. nigga its time to start experimenting with ur sound.. its aii doe

  • Bb0311

So did Drake make any money on degrassi? From many of his songs, you get the feeling that he was doing slave labor w/o pay!

Every time I hear him talking about being broke in one of his songs, I instantly think, “Nigga you wasn’t broke playing jimmy, especially after yo ass got shot”

    • Earthshaker1217

Probably not as much as money as he’s making now. But I understand what you’re saying.

    • DramaQueen

He talked about Degrassi a few years ago & admitted that his pay was terrible, the whole cast was making less than a teacher’s salary. Apparently Canadian TV didnt pay well back in the day. But he did it because he & his mother didnt have any real income.

      • Yep It’s Kwanzaa

hmmm I wonder if it was the same for the cast of Are you Afraid of the Dark? I wasn’t a big Degrassi fan but that show was my jam on Snick.

      • Breeze

I’m sure he got paid more than a teacher. I saw his Canadian version of MTV cribs and he was driving an Acura at 16. Also his house was no struggle house 2 stories with a basement . Try again Aubrey.

        • ifyouseekAMY

His mom was also a teacher and they had rich family so…

  • ZJ

The beat is hot, but his voice is not.

  • Drakes mistress

My first thought, “started as a bottom”…I’m rude

    • Scarf Junkie

      You know what…*dead* (So did I though…lmao)

  • Beyonce’s Earpiece

That beat is BUMPIN big time! Def can imagine folks chantin in the club “Started from the Bottom now we here”

  • KidFury

I think I expected something a bit bigger, in a sense. Drake is usually a pretty creative dude. I like the song, but it sounds like something for Future.

Whatever. It feels like Take Care came out yesterday to me.

    • Earthshaker1217

The beat gets me hype. It’s not as big as I expected it to be, so maybe the video will give it something extra.

      • Beyonce’s Earpiece

Yea, music videos can really enhance a song when done right

  • M.J.

I’ll let this grow on me. I couldn’t get into Take Care.

  • Welp

I clicked the link for Drake bottom jokes, smh…don’t let me down team!

  • Saucy

I hope this is a buzz single. This really sounds like something he couldve threw on a mixtape. But Im still here for Drake. He makes GREAT music.

  • Lisa

This is not first single worthy.

  • Jacqxz

hot beat cute lil joint but why I thought that said “started AS a bottom” and just started smelling the shade…

  • Onicka’s Grammy Nomination

Lol…started from the bottom. It makes fun of itself.

    • Michele Lee

My sentiments exactly…how ironic that he started as a bottom…I mean from the bottom

  • FreeTuitionMakeHerDance

I like it, definitely can bump this in the car.

  • naomi campbell’s hairline

i really like what he’s done with this track.

  • RamenNoodles

Its a cute little bop I can see the urban community taking a like to this. I’m sure they gonna play the hell out of it on the radio like they did The Motto. I didn’t like it at first I was like “this is it?” but after a few more plays I started to enjoy it the chorus is really catchy I expected something better though. He had some hot verses last year & Take Care was a good album so I’m not worried. Why he change his voice though? O.o I guess its just the audio.

  • Taylor

more like started as a bottom…

    • Welp

    • vanillashake

      deadd lol

  • Cha!

I like this song but Drake, you don’t know what the bottom is. 50 cent, eminem, Jay Z they started from the bottom. Drake started in a upscale Jewish neighborhood in Toronto that I couldn’t even afford to drive thru.

  • FrankOceansPoliceReport

Oh dear Aubrey why are u still trying to feed us “Struggles of A Light Skinned Ninja”

    • Welp

  • Coonye West

Sounds like the shit you hear on the radio in Grand Theft Auto III. His first studio album was amazing to me so thank God for iPods and the rewind capability.

  • choclatcherry

“Vocally, Drizzy kind of sounds like my uncle after a few Red Stripes and a stressful game of dominoes.”

Fury, your descriptions often have me on the verge of spit-laughter. So, thanx for that. :)

  • MissMe

I am not here for this song Aubrey in any way, shape, or form… no sir… NO…

  • Kyana

F Drake, Bey Slayed, that is all.

    • Welp

       RIGHT. LOL!

  • Onika’s Common Sense

That hook was more useless & repetitive than Nicki’s use of ‘bitches is my sons’ on everything.

  • Pop It For Some Boston Market

Nice to hear Drake coming out with new music, but are the rumors true that he left YM & is signed to Roc Nation now

    • Scarf Junkie

      But your name tho…lmfao

      • Ari

        lmao right.

  • Scarf Junkie

I was waiting for a Rick Ross grunt or something, I dunno…this is kinda meh to me. Come back stronger Rupert.

  • Welp

Not interested in the song, but I would like to know what bottom he is referring to.  The bottom bunk bed??? I am not here for his imaginary struggle stories. Sesame Street rappin ass mulatto.
